To promote entrepreneurship and economic growth and enable women to earn their livelihood, the district administration of Sangrur in Punjab state of India has started a project to help them set up their small enterprises. Promoting Employment of Households through Entrepreneurship and Livelihood (PEHEL) empowers village-level self-help group (SHG) members to become entrepreneurs by starting their business ventures in rural areas. While PEHEL imparts the training, SHGs provide the loans. Under this initiative, women have formed an oil extraction unit, a slipper unit, a travel agency, a bus service, and an entertainment company, among others. PEHEL also helps women to sell their produce by organizing Sunday markets.
